Source: Reuters — Italy Regulator Probes Suno Over Terms of Service
Italy’s antitrust authority has opened an investigation into whether clauses in Suno’s terms of service create an unfair imbalance between the AI music company and its users.
The regulator says Suno’s terms may give the company broad discretion to change its contract, service and subscription prices unilaterally without providing a justification.
The authority is also examining the scope of the license users grant Suno and a waiver of moral rights that it says may conflict with Italian copyright law.
Other concerns include mandatory arbitration in the United States, class-action waivers and Massachusetts being designated as the exclusive jurisdiction for legal claims. Suno was not immediately available to comment, according to Reuters.
Why it matters: The investigation focuses on consumer contracts, not on whether Suno-generated music infringes copyright. For AI music creators, it is a reminder to review what a platform may do with uploaded audio, generated songs and user accounts, as well as how prices and disputes can be handled.
The investigation is not a finding that Suno violated the law. Italy’s regulator plans to open a consultation in which business groups, chambers of commerce and consumer associations can participate.
