Independent music publisher Round Hill Music has filed separate federal lawsuits accusing Suno and Anthropic of using copyrighted compositions without authorization to train their AI systems.
The complaints initially identify more than 500 compositions connected to artists including James Brown, The Kinks and the Goo Goo Dolls. Round Hill told the court that it could eventually add 10,000 or more compositions.
The publisher says potential damages could approach or exceed $1 billion if the cases expand. This is an allegation and damages have not been awarded. Suno and Anthropic had not responded to Reuters’ requests for comment when its report was published.
Why it matters: Suno’s recent licensing agreements have not ended its exposure to claims involving earlier AI-training practices. The lawsuits also illustrate the difference between rights to a finished AI-generated song and questions about the copyrighted material used to train the underlying model.
