An international coalition representing sports, film, publishing, software and other creative sectors has warned Australia that an AI-training copyright regime could weaken licensing markets far beyond its borders.
The Australian reports that the Alliance for Intellectual Property wrote to Arts Minister Tony Burke as the government considers options that may include statutory licensing and an opt-out system for copyrighted works used in AI training. The coalition warned that overseas works could be swept into an Australian system without permission, creating what it called a “content laundering” risk.
For musicians, publishers and labels, the practical issue is control. A compulsory or opt-out framework could shift the burden from AI developers seeking permission to creators having to block use. The government said consultations are continuing and that any future changes should provide meaningful control and fair compensation, so no final policy has been adopted.
