A small Duke Sanford study found that all nine artists identified as AI-generated through Deezer’s labels reached test accounts through Spotify’s Release Radar, while none disclosed AI use on their Spotify profiles.
Five researchers trained new Spotify accounts by genre and listened for 28 days. Across 728 artists, the team assessed unfamiliar acts using public clues and cross-checked 64 of them on Deezer. Nine carried Deezer AI tags, and every one had appeared through Release Radar.
The result is important but not a platform-wide audit. The report does not identify the listening dates, may predate Spotify’s newer AI Persona badges and gave Release Radar more listening time than several other surfaces. The useful takeaway is narrower: listeners cannot reliably infer AI use from a thin biography, rapid release schedule or lack of live shows, so visible metadata and distributor-level disclosure remain more dependable than guesswork.
